Is Hiddify a VPN?

For everyday users, Hiddify can work like a VPN. Technically, it is a modern multi-protocol client with several connection modes.

The word VPN is often used for any app that routes traffic through another network path. Hiddify can do that in VPN mode, so it is reasonable for a beginner to think of it as a VPN client. But Hiddify is broader than a traditional one-protocol VPN app.

Hiddify supports modern proxy and tunneling protocols such as VLESS, Reality, TUIC and Hysteria 2. It can also run in Proxy or System Proxy mode, where only compatible apps use the connection.

What VPN mode means

In VPN mode, Hiddify creates a tunnel at the operating system level. Most traffic from your device can go through that tunnel without each app needing its own proxy settings. That is why VPN mode is usually the easiest choice on Android and iPhone.

VPN mode does not mean Hiddify owns the network or locks you into one provider. It means the app is using the operating system VPN interface to route traffic.

Why Hiddify is different from many VPN apps

Many commercial VPN apps hide the underlying configuration and work only with their own service. Hiddify is open source and configuration-friendly. You can import a VLESS subscription from a compatible provider, refresh it, move it to another device and often use the same subscription in other clients.

This makes Hiddify a good balance for beginners: the app feels simple, but the underlying model stays open.

Which mode should I choose?

Choose VPN mode when you want the simplest and most reliable setup. Choose System Proxy on desktop if you only need browsers and proxy-aware apps to use Hiddify. Choose Proxy mode when you know exactly which application will be configured manually.

Practical answer: yes, Hiddify can be used like a VPN, but it is more accurate to call it an open-source client for modern internet access protocols.
